A fellow Catholic, [redacted], has committed adultery, as her marriage to [redacted] has been inadequate. Her father is the only one in her life that could convince her to confession, as others have tried but failed.

What can we do to help her?

I suppose I would first question the notion that a marriage could be “inadequate.” Outside of that question, and more to the question presented by the commenter, I would attempt to explain to our friend of the grace received by the sacrament of Reconciliation.

Sin is a violation of the love relationship between a person and God. It hurts God to see us do things which are harmful to us. Adultery is unquestionably harmful to us, and so in committing adultery we are harming not only ourselves, but we are causing pain to God. This is why we are then in need of restoring our relationship with God.

It’s not about being punished, but about turning your life away from that which is harmful (sin) and towards that which will truly give you happiness and abundant life (God).
